After the World

Most books written from the perspective of orcs are humorous โ€“ at least thatโ€™s my impression. Orcs are presented as big buffoons who use excessive force and insufficient reason, and itโ€™s a good laugh. Iโ€™m sure there are books that donโ€™t fit that description, but so far I havenโ€™t read them.

Well, except for this oneโ€ฆ

After The World follows an orc warlord after he led his race into ruin in the war against the daylight people. Itโ€™s a thoughtful and introspective story โ€“ more focused on getting to know and understand the main character than on fast paced action.

In that way, itโ€™s very different to pretty much everything else Iโ€™ve read lately.

What Iโ€™ll whine about:

The story does occasionally feel a little bit slow.

What Iโ€™ll gush about:

The unique perspective. Itโ€™s not just that the main character is a fully realized orc; heโ€™s also responsible for driving his entire race to the brink of extinction. This isnโ€™t something Iโ€™ve come across before, and itโ€™s interesting to ride along with his thoughts and emotions as he makes his way through the world.

The pace. Itโ€™s not a fast story. It doesnโ€™t just jump from action scene to action scene, and I quite enjoyed that. Itโ€™s refreshing. For the most part the story still doesnโ€™t feel slow (but it does happen), but rather like itโ€™s setting a leisurely pace without the need to rush.

Final Comments:

If you want something thatโ€™s a little bit off the beaten path, and donโ€™t mind a more relaxed pace, this is for you.
