After the World

Most books written from the perspective of orcs are humorous โ at least thatโs my impression. Orcs are presented as big buffoons who use excessive force and insufficient reason, and itโs a good laugh. Iโm sure there are books that donโt fit that description, but so far I havenโt read them.
Well, except for this oneโฆ
After The World follows an orc warlord after he led his race into ruin in the war against the daylight people. Itโs a thoughtful and introspective story โ more focused on getting to know and understand the main character than on fast paced action.
In that way, itโs very different to pretty much everything else Iโve read lately.
What Iโll whine about:
The story does occasionally feel a little bit slow.
What Iโll gush about:
The unique perspective. Itโs not just that the main character is a fully realized orc; heโs also responsible for driving his entire race to the brink of extinction. This isnโt something Iโve come across before, and itโs interesting to ride along with his thoughts and emotions as he makes his way through the world.
The pace. Itโs not a fast story. It doesnโt just jump from action scene to action scene, and I quite enjoyed that. Itโs refreshing. For the most part the story still doesnโt feel slow (but it does happen), but rather like itโs setting a leisurely pace without the need to rush.
Final Comments:
If you want something thatโs a little bit off the beaten path, and donโt mind a more relaxed pace, this is for you.
