Book Review: Playing Fae Games

Book Review: Playing Fae Games

by Isa Medina

Dangerous Fae. Dangerous games.

Just when I thought I had achieved my life-long dream of becoming an Artifact Hunter for the Institute, Aidan goes missing before signing off on the paperwork.

Whatโ€™s a girl to do in these circumstances but track him down?

Unfortunately, Aidanโ€™s trail leads right into the one place best enjoyed from afar: the otherworld land of Faerie, where Fae Lords rule, help comes at a steep price, and creatures love to gnaw on human parts.

Itโ€™s also way out of the Instituteโ€™s reach, so any rescue mission is up to me. Sneaking into Faerie might be the most dangerous thing Iโ€™ve ever done, but for Aidanโ€”not to mention my dream jobโ€”Iโ€™m willing to take the risk.

Getting into Fae-land proves to be easy, finding Aidan a bit more tricky. Surviving the trip and making it out? Well, thatโ€™s going to depend on how many Fae tricks we can avoidโ€ฆand how good I am at playing their games.

I am quickly becoming a big fan of Isa Medina’s Magical Artifacts Institute series of novellas, as you can probably tell by my review of the first book Finding Fae Artififacts.

The sequel carries off where the first left as main character Maddie arrives on the first day of her new job at the institute, only to discover that its owner and grumpy love interest Aidan has mysteriously disappeared into the land of Faerie. If Maddie stands any chance of starting her dream job as an artifact hunter, then she’ll need to risk life and limb by entering the treacherous world of the Fae on a rescue mission. And maybe she’ll snag a few artifacts on the way, eh?

What I’ll whine about:

We don’t get to spend too much time in Faerie as Maddie is trapped inside a rather creepy Fae mansion, thus I’d love to learn more about the Fae and their culture and society which is briefly touched upon here.

What I’ll gush about:

I absolutely love the sense of adventure in these novellas which carries on in the sequel. These are short and sweet cheerful feel-good stories, though don’t let me fool you; there’s thrilling action and monster battles as well. I especially like that it’s Maddie who is attempting to rescue the love interest, and the banter between the two is great fun. Maddie herself is an incredibly optimistic if not ditzy main character, and her voice comes through brilliantly. She’s the kind of trouble you want to run into.

Final Words:

Reading these books honestly reminds me of The Mummy films; full of wholesome adventure, treasure hunting, exotic monsters, and dripping with good humour. I can’t wait to see what trouble Maddie finds herself in next.
