Books for Ace Pride Week

This week is Ace Pride Week, which is a celebration of asexuality. Naturally here at Read Indie Fantasy, we wanted to celebrate indie and self-published books that feature major asexual characters and ace-identifying authors writing SFF.

It’s hard to narrow down a list of books, so I’ve gone for a mix of fifteen books featuring asexuality that I think you should check out. This list includes fantasy, sci-fi and cozy, so there’s something for everyone. But if you’re looking for more, then please take a look at our LGBTQIA+ Book Collection.

Further more, if you’d like to support ace books and ace authors, check out this Ace Pride Week bundle on Itch.io, courtesy of Kai Zeal.

So let’s take a look at some books:

A Designer Magick: An Art Deco Fantasy by Fox N. Locke

An Art Deco fantasy where fashion is the highest form of power and mages rule the roost.

Vlyn Adare is an illegal magick user hiding in plain sight, a seamstress going nowhere fast.

When sheโ€™s not dreaming of being Vlynโ€™s beau, socialite Shirley Hollister fantasises about being a fashion designer but is stuck in a rut as a receptionist.

To escape his fundamentalist family, Ellory Miller begrudgingly becomes a mage, even if he only wants to make magickal couture.

Rejected by both the mages and gender critical witches, Niven is forced to become a freelancer, hunting rogue magickal users to avoid arrest themself.

Lien Bassett, a trans journalist living stealth, has been trying for decades in vain to hold the mage Tower to account.

All five are brought together after Ellory blows the whistle on the Head Mageโ€™s criminal activity. Hidden prisons, protests, dramatic magick battles, and plenty of fabulous fashion await them.

Unashamedly queer โ€“ and built around a slow burn F/F romance โ€“ A Designer Magick investigates mental health, gender, and freedom of speech in an evocative 1920s style setting.

Awakenings by Claudie Arseneault

Innkeep, hunter, blacksmith, nurseโ€”Horace has apprenticed for every clan in the domed city of Trenaze, and they’ve all rejected em. Too hare-brained. Too talkative. Too slow. Ever the optimist, e has joined Trenaze’s guards to be mentored. Horace has high hopes to earn eir place during eir trial at the Great Market. That is, until the glowing shards haunting the world break through the city’s protective dome, fused together in a single, monstrous amalgam of Fragments.

Armed with a sword, a shield, and far too little training, Horace doubts eir ability to defend the market-goers. But eir last stand is interrupted by a mysterious elven figure who can dissipate the Fragments with a single, strange sentence: your story is my story.

From the moment it is uttered, Horace knows the sentences holds true for em, tooโ€”and when the elf collapses in the middle of the market, e carries them to safety, to recover away from the panicked crowd and inevitable questions from eir fellow guards. It could cost em eir apprenticeshipโ€”eir last chance to find eir place in eir home cityโ€”but Horace cannot resist the pull of this mystery elf and the call of a new friend.

Aliyah has but one desire: to leave Trenaze’s safe boundaries and find the forest that haunts their dreams. After an afternoon of board games in their quiet, sharp-witted company, Horace is ready to follow, confronting Fragments and other dangers of the road to understand what happened that day, hear Aliyah’s laugh again and finally feel like e belongs.

The Thirteenth Key by Cara Nox

โ€œThe thirteen emblems given to the original rulers werenโ€™t just symbols. Theyโ€™re keys to the Vaultโ€”one that no oneโ€™s ever opened.โ€

Noa has lived her life as an unsuspecting, ID-burning, face in the crowd that disposes of โ€œproblemsโ€ for her miscellaneous, secretive employers. So, when Noaโ€™s surrogate fatherโ€”a Seerโ€”hands her a long-lost emblem, telling her with his dying breath that it’s her responsibility to reignite magic, she laughs at the idea that the fate of their world rests on the shoulders of a killer. Instead, she uses his words and the key he gave her as an excuse to go on one final suicide mission to seek out the power supposedly waiting for her to annihilate his murderer.

Prince Glacier Caelius has lived his life trapped inside a gilded cage, pushed down by the ever-present threat of death as the bastard son of Amaraisโ€™s late king.
