Well, it’s about time…
The final score came in this morning, and we have two clear winners, both of which were read and rated by all four members. In addition, each judge rated both finalists as their top two books in this round.
Even then, it was a close thing. Our team had a solid pick of books this round, and we’re honoured and privileged to have been able to read so many great stories (that’s the best part of being a judge here).
Anyway…
Finalists…
You want to know which ones they are?
Really?
Really, really?
Okay, fine, I’ll tell you.
In no particular order, here is

From These Dark Abodes is a gripping mixture of Greek mythology and dark, gothic horror with atmospheric prose that had me hooked from the beginning. I loved it and would urge anyone who enjoys gothic horror, mythology, and original story ideas to give it a try!
Lilly
This is one of those books that is best experienced with little knowledge of what it’s about. From These Dark Abodes will stick with me for a long time. A story of love, loss, and a desire for freedom, this story will be best enjoyed by those who like rich prose, body horror, and tales that divert your expectations.

Something I really loved about the setting of this story is how grounded it felt. […]
[…] lately I’ve found myself drawn to fantasy settings that feel like they could actually exist, and The Butcher’s lot is definitely one of those.

As the story unfolds, the two characters will lead readers into a painstakingly emotional tale. One where dark desires and untold horrors play no slight part. And yet small kindnesses will find their way into the characters’ lives, making them seek futures and opportunities once forbidden to them.
Sue
The Butcher’s Lot was a highly enjoyable, character-driven short read which I would recommend to lovers of the gothic genre, vampire fans, and anyone who sympathises with female protagonists who have been terribly wronged, yet seem on track to become vengeful monsters.
Congratulations to the finalists, and thanks once again to everyone taking part.
