From Book 1: Destined for a life in a prison cell, a future is something Adaline never dreamed of.
On dystopian Hawaii, a tyrant king hunts the gifted – an elite group of citizens with an enhanced sense of sight, hearing, taste, touch, or smell – and brainwashes them to serve in his army, using their powers for his own gain. Adaline has spent the last seven years in prison due to her family’s misfortune, placing her amongst a small piece of society that the world outside of these cement walls has forgotten about. Until the night her gift presents itself, and now Adaline is no longer a scrawny prisoner, but a valuable asset to the king. Adaline’s life is not a matter of life or death, but freedom or enslavement. Knowing her only chance to survive is to flee the king and his gifted army, Adaline escapes from her prison cell and runs for her life.
Aided by her best friend and one of the king’s own ex-officers, Adaline attempts to locate a place where she won’t be found. Instead, she uncovers a family secret her father orchestrated, and suddenly her isolated placement in that prison cell doesn’t seem all that coincidental, the friends who travel with her aren’t there by mere luck, and it begs the question of how much of her life has been foreseen, and what will her future hold?

The Markings series is a compete trilogy. The final book, Shattered Visons, was published on 21st September 2021 at 493 pages.

Catherine Downen is the author of THE MARKINGS series. She recently graduated from Bradley University with a degree Mechanical Engineering. She has always had a love for writing and a passion for telling stories. Currently, Catherine is working as a Sustaining Engineer in St. Louis by day, while continuing to write on the side.
