Welcome to Day One of our Indie Fantasy Advent Calendar! We’re featuring an underrated indie author every day this holiday season to spread a little festive joy and promote authors we think deserve more love. Read our introduction to find out more.
Let’s open day nine and see what book lies behind…
Today, on December 9th, we’re opening our calendar to Where Blood Runs Gold by A.C. Cross.
Sheriff Errol Thorpeโs life is chaotic, brutal, and above all, solitary. After an unimaginable loss years ago, all he feels is the compulsion to seek vengeance. But when a vulnerable family arrives in town, facing an ugly future, he is pulled headfirst into a web of violence, secrets, and things he never imagined. In search of truth and answers, Thorpe finds himself battling deadly flesh-eating Dust, acidic golden blood, and the political designs of powerful people โ all the while learning how to be a person again. When Dust rises in San Dios, people hide indoors. When Sheriff Thorpe arrives, people run.
Where Blood Runs Gold is a weird western for those who like a bit of eldritch horror in their wild west fantasy stories. Western fantasy books don’t get as much love as other subgenres for some reason, and this is definitely one that could do with a few more eyes!
The author is especially good at writing weird stories, including their short novellas Zoo and The Boddicker Letters. I was especially impressed with Zoo and found it to be quite an emotional journey that represented aspects of my own life. I certainly want to read more from this author!

About the Author
A.C. Cross is a doctor, but not the kind that you want treating you for kidney stones or pneumonia or anything. Thatโd likely make your situation much worse.
He (currently) lives in the Great White North of the United States as a bearded, single man.
Heโs a lover of words, many of which are in all his books.
Heโs an admitted scotch whisky and beer snob and his liver would not argue with him.
He has written five books now, but the three in the Roboverse are funny and not nearly as sweary or violent as Where Blood Runs Gold.
You can find more about him as well as some neat little free stories at www.aaronccross.com.
